According to data by market research agency Rncos, the Chinese footwear market is pegged at Rs 75,000 crore -- almost three times the size of the Indian footwear market, which is currently pegged at Rs 20,000 crore by analysts. While the Indian market is growing at 10 per cent, the Chinese market is growing at over 20 per cent, notes Singh.

Rncos says "almost everybody" is sourcing from China. "No one seems to have looked at the opportunity that the domestic Chinese market provides because of the sheer numbers," points out its managing director Shushumal Maheshwari.

The Chinese market is dominated like India, by unorganised players. In the organised segment, the leading players are Yue Yuen, Li Ning, New Balance Athletic Shoe, Nike, Pegasus and Brown Shoes.

According to other analysts tracking the company, while the Woodland foray into an international franchisee model might be new, the company has a range and product that might just make this a success.

Lion Air will use the aircraft to transport more of Indonesia's rapidly expanding middle class to new destinations across the archipelago and to other parts of Asia, said Director Edward Sirait.

"Indonesia's big domestic market will be our first priority," he said in an interview. But "in addition to the domestic market, we plan to expand to medium routes in Asia, focusing on Asia's southern markets." Lion Air also plans to offer full-service flights.

Bombardier Inc. said Wednesday that Lion's main competitor, Indonesian flagship carrier PT Garuda Indonesia, would buy six of the Canadian aircraft maker's CRJ1000 jets, valued at $300 million in total, and has options to buy another 18.

Despite its recent shopping spree, Lion Air is little-known outside Indonesia. It has focused primarily on the domestic market rather than international and longer-distance routes, as Malaysia's AirAsia Bhd. and other large Asian carriers have done.

While that has kept the Indonesian carrier's flying-lion logo out of the eye of many regional travelers, it has so far helped keep the airline out of the bruising competition that has squeezed profits on some regional routes. AirAsia X, AirAsia's long-distance associate, recently said it would cancel flights to parts of India and elsewhere because of high fuel prices and weakening demand.

One question is whether Indonesia's market is large enough to drive most of Lion Air's growth, or whether the carrier will need to expand overseas more aggressively than planned. That would throw yet another carrier into the mix as other Asian budget carriers add or expand long-distance operations.

With the world's fourth-largest population—behind China, India and the U.S.—Indonesia is seen by many analysts as one of the world's last big growth markets for airlines.

Only a small percentage of its population has ever flown, even though a lack of roads, trains and ferries makes air travel the only means to reach many parts of the 17,000-island country.

As Indonesian incomes have risen, the number of air passengers in the country has jumped close to 50% in the last two years to around 65 million last year, according to Indonesia's National Statistics Board. Meanwhile, business travel has jumped as domestic and international companies have flown to the far corners of the country in search of its rich natural resources, including coal, tin and palm oil.

Indonesia last year drew a record $20 billion in foreign direct investment and tallied the country's highest economic expansion, 6.5% growth in gross domestic product, in 15 years.

But Lion Air also has competition from Garuda and its growing low-cost carrier Citilink, as well as from AirAsia's Indonesian operations and smaller domestic airlines, such as Batavia Air and PT Sriwijaya Air. In recent years, many smaller airlines have attempted to conquer the Indonesian market and disappeared because of safety problems or heavy debt.

While it will be five years before the first of Lion Air's latest orders are delivered, the carrier will have to start developing new local and international routes if it wants to fill the new aircraft, analysts said.

"If they really take all of the aircraft, they will definitely be a threat," said John Rachmat, an analyst at Royal Bank of Scotland Asia Securities in Singapore. "It is not something to sneeze at."

The airline had looked at the possibility of expanding through joint ventures in Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia and Australia, but decided to abandon those plans. Mr. Sirait, the Lion director, said Wednesday that the company has no plans to form joint ventures, the method AirAsia has used to expand in Asia.

"We are successfully recognized as a low-cost carrier and plan to step up into the full-service carrier business as well," he said. "We are looking at all potential markets with a focus on domestic and medium-range routes."

One factor that could hold Lion back is lingering concern over Indonesia's safety record.

The country long has had one of the worst accident rates in Asia, though its record has improved somewhat in recent years. In 2007, the U.S. downgraded the safety status of Indonesia's civil-aviation directorate, and the European Union put all the country's carriers on a list of banned airlines.

The EU in 2009 removed Garuda and some others from the list after they persuaded regulators that the airlines' safety procedures were sufficient. Safety officials in Brussels and elsewhere remain concerned, however, that while some Indonesian airlines run tight operations, the government's safety officials aren't sufficiently rigorous.

A Lion Air plane crash-landed in 2004, killing 25 people, and the airline has had a number of other safety incidents, including hard landings and overshot runways. Over the last several months, three of Lion Air's pilots have been arrested after testing positive for illegal drugs. The carrier is adjusting how it monitors its pilots' behavior to stop similar incidents, Mr. Sirait said.

Within the report England players held nothing back in their criticism of each other, coach Martin Johnson and the English coaching team, producing a litany of complaints illustrating a fractured set-up.

With no permanent chief executive yet in place at the Rugby Football Union (RFU), no national coach appointed and a disunited and disillusioned playing staff, morale within the England camp could hardly be lower as the nation looks to build before hosting the next World Cup in 2015.

Despite all this, however, major sponsors are unlikely to desert England, according to an industry expert.

"The England 'brand' is certainly blemished right now, but not permanently," said James Scholefield, Senior Vice President of sponsorship consultants Repucom International.

"And the reasons why the RFU is able to attract investment from blue-chip sponsors remain intact, despite the on and off-field failings of the World Cup."

Major commercial sponsors of the RFU include sportswear and equipment supplier Nike, telecommunications provider O2 and Tata Motors-owned car manufacturer Land Rover .

Eight years ago England's golden team surged to World Cup glory Down Under with victory over hosts Australia in the final in Sydney.

This year in New Zealand, their dismal campaign will be best remembered for poor discipline and poor decisions both on and off the pitch.

The 2011 team was beaten by France in the quarter-finals, but not before providing a series of sensational headlines for off-field antics which included drinking and partying.

The negative headlines continued after their exit from the tournament with one player jumping from an Auckland ferry.

SQUAD HAUNTED

Vice-captain Mike Tindall was belatedly fined 25,000 pounds ($39,100) for his drunken behaviour during an infamous night out at a bar in Queenstown.

Other players were seen wrestling and posing for photographs with dwarves at the bar which was hosting a "Mad Midget Weekender".

The England camp sought to defend Tindall but the incident refused to die down and haunted the squad for the duration of the tournament. Several comments in the leaked players' report were critical of the England management's handling of the incident as well as Tindall's actions.

"Rugby embodies certain values and codes that businesses both admire and aspire to, and dwarf-tossing, or a player diving off a ferry, doesn't suddenly mean those values are cast asunder," Scholefield told Reuters.

"In fact, the way the RFU has dealt with Mike Tindall by fining him and dropping him from the elite squad suggests to me that the RFU is doing more than many other governing bodies would do to put their house in order.

"Let's also not lose sight of the fact that England have by many people's reckoning a pretty talented bunch of young players at their disposal, and are hosting the rugby World Cup in 2015.

"For those reasons, the England rugby team still remains one of the most attractive sporting brands for sponsors to be associated with. And let's face it, rugby has a long way to fall before it joins football in moral bankruptcy."

The RFU said on Wednesday it would bring in outsiders to help identify the source of the leaked documents.

The Rugby Players' Association, which compiled the players' comments for the report while ensuring their anonymity, said it was appalling the review had been made public.

The shoe is called the Air Jordan III Black/Cement, and it's highly anticipated, said Ida Hendrix, general manager for Briarwood Mall.

Hendrix said Briarwood doesn't typically get customers waiting in line outside the mall doors before Black Friday opening since there are five entrances, but there will be customers waiting to buy the new shoes at Champs Sports and Foot Locker.

“This particular release has been anticipated for a very long time,” she said.

Champs will open at midnight Thursday, along with at least 21 other stores at Briarwood. The shoe will be available as soon as the store opens.

Foot Locker has yet to announce what time on Friday it will begin selling the Air Jordan, but as of Tuesday afternoon, the store planned to open at 4 a.m. with the rest of the Briarwood stores.

Ty Mopkins of Ypsilanti's Puffer Red's and Jus Shooz in Wayne, said there is a huge amount of interest in the shoe release and people will be standing outside both stores before they open at 10 a.m. on Friday.

“There will for sure be people waiting in line,” he said. “We get maybe 50 to 100 calls a day for the shoe.”

The Air Jordan III Black/Cement sells for $160, and don't expect it to be marked down for Black Friday sales, Mopkins said.

“The shoes we get here are limited and really exclusive,” he said. “Normally we don't mark them down because the new products come out and the companies don't allow it.”

There will be another Air Jordan shoe release on Dec. 23, and Mopkins said sales for that one will be “bigger than any other shoe.”

Under Armour may be under Nike for now when it comes to sales of athletic apparel, but it's the mouse that roared, according to the students and staff members of Morningside College who are gobbling up the Under Armour itemsat the campus Bookstore.

"That's probably the hottest item that we sell," said Duane Benson, director of the Morningside College Bookstore, located in the lower level of the Olsen Student Center. "They have a huge line of apparel: mouthguards, socks, shoes, shorts, sweatshirts, hats, backpacks. We carry a pretty wide array of them."

The bookstore has been selling Under Armour athletic wear, many bearing the Morningside logo, for three or four years and they are clearly outselling the duds that were hanging on the racks before that, Benson said.

"Under Armour was developed as performance gear for athletes," he said. "But everybody wears it any more ... faculty, staff. I've got a few hanging in my closet. It's really taken off."

One of the brand's more adament supporters is Amanda Bryan, a work study student from Denison, Iowa, who works at the bookstore. And for her, it is all about comfort.

"I'm cold-blooded, basically. So I wear sweatshirts all the time, and it keeps me cooler and I can wear a lighter jacket and still have Under Armour on and still be warm at the same time," Bryan said. "It's just comfortable. You don't get too hot and you don't get too cold. it just depends on what the season is outside. I can work outside and still be comfortable without a jacket on with Under Armour on."

All of her friends have a variety of Under Armour items in their clothing selection. she noted.

Made of polyester, not cotton, the Under Armour garments help you avoid that clammy feeling, Benson said.

The company was founded in 1996 by Kevin Plank, a former University of Maryland special teams captain for the university football team. Plank and co-founder Jordan Lindgren, another former University of Maryland football player, began their business from Plank's grandmother's basement in Washington, D.C.

Plank, who go tired of having to change out of the sweat-soaked cotton T-shirts he wore under his jersey, noticed that his compression shorts stayed dry. This was the inspiration to make a T-shirt using moisture-wicking fabric for athletic performance.

The company built up slowly through word of mouth. Then a newspaper photo of Oakland Raiders quarterback Jeff George wearing an Under Armour mock turtleneck brought the company to the attention of Georgia Tech which bought some shirts, and the word spread.

Under Armour made its first profit in 1998 and got its first big break the following year when Jamie Foxx, featured as quarterback Willie Beamen in the Oliver Stone movie, "Any Given Sunday," wore an Under Armour jockstrap. That attention, followed by an ad in ESPN The Magazine, generated close to $750,000 in sales.

Under Armour opened its first retail location in 2007 in Annapolis, Maryland."I think it's more popular than Nike and a lot of the other name-brand stuff that's out there," Bryan said, a testament to the brand's burgeoning popularity. But it still has a way to go to catch Nike.

Nike remains Under Armour's greatest rival with 7 percent of the U.S. sports apparel market, compared with less than 3 percent for Under Armour, according to Sporting Goods Intelligence. And Under Armour has an even longer way to go to match Nike's global reach. Just 6 percent of its revenue comes from abroad, compared with over 60 percent fof Nike.

But the company had definitely made inroads into the Sioux City market.

And just last month, the company updated its net revenue expectation for 2011 to range from $1.46 billion to $1.47 billion, up 37 to 38 percent over 2010. Estimates of operating income for this year range from $159 to $162 million up 42-44 percent over last year and higher than earlier predictions.

Coach's son swaps rugby for fashion

For Andrew Henry, turning his life-long obsession with sneakers into a career has been as hard-fought as any rugby game.

After returning to New Zealand from playing professional rugby in Wales and Italy, the son of the All Blacks' World Cup-winning coach, Graham Henry, decided to pursue his passion - designing sneakers.

Despite having no background in business or designing shoes the Auckland entrepreneur, who owns about 100 pairs of sneakers, put pen to paper to come up with his perfect shoe. That turned out to be the easy part.

"Everything I have done I have had to learn myself. From finding a factory, to production, to dealing with China," said the 30-year-old.

"The whole process from start to finish was self taught, so as you can imagine there was a lot of trial and error."

Yours was set up in 2009 and last year launched the first range of limited edition sneakers at Wunderkammer in Auckland. The new range, which launches next Thursday at ONE on Karangahape Rd in Auckland, includes more styles, women's sizes, and it's going global.

Henry travelled to New York with some pairs of sneakers in a suitcase and "walked the streets until I was lucky enough to lock one store down".

"In terms of distribution, especially internationally, I have encountered difficulties with retailers being unwilling to take on a new, completely unknown brand. A big part in overcoming this was making the effort to meet people face-to-face.

''Travelling to Melbourne, New York and Tokyo, and getting to know distributors made a big difference. I have learned that building a working relationship takes more than just a good product."

The shoes are simple, sleek with an eye to detail.

Henry admits he's inspired by iconic sneakers made by adidas and Nike, but "I try to incorporate interesting things and people I see every day''.

''Some things work, some things don't. All sneakers have something unique to offer and the culture as a whole influences me."

While it's been a long road from drawing the shoes to the launch next week, Henry has no regrets.

"Seeing my work completed it makes it all worth it. I still remember seeing the first pair on a stranger walking the streets, very cool."

Although he credits his father for being one of his biggest inspirations, and he's going to get him a pair of his new range, the company is all his.

"A friend came up with the name because I had done this all on my own. He said, 'it's yours' and it just made sense."

So I run wrong. I got it. And the more I run, the worse it's gonna get – the more I'm going to kill my joints, the creakier I'll be in twenty years, the more worthless pairs of shiny, aesthetically divine sneakers I'm going to pay money to hurt me. I wish you'd told me this when I was 10. Then I could have avoided tumbling down this disastrous, commercialized path. Ten year-olds, it appears, are the newly recognized running gurus of a lost generation of overstrained athletes. But instead, I'm 20, and my motions are stuck in a cyclical heel to toe, heel to toe running rhythm.

So explains Christopher McDougall in a recent article in the New York Times Magazine, building on the wealth of knowledge he acquired from writing his book “Born to Run” to disprove all previous running myths. McDougall's audience is an aging generation of men and women still overtaken by runner's lust, but unable to justify the damage consistent running continues to inflict on their bodies. As it turns out, the shoe industry they have been worshipping, pioneered by Nike, took off with untested items and spiraled out of control, cluttering our closets with shoes that proclaim to reduce impact, but in fact encourage a style of running that hits our muscles with a force of up to three times our body weight.

But let them fear not, for McDougall has connected with a number of new experts (among them, the Tarahumara, a hidden desert society of ultra marathoners, and medical specialist Mark Cucuzzella, a runner reborn) to unveil the injury-proof, evolution-tested “one best way” to run: no pushing from the toes, no landing on the heel. Victim 1 testified that he was sexually assaulted by Jerry Sandusky during a disturbing ritual in the basement bedroom of Sandusky's home. Sandusky would lie underneath the 12-year-old boy.

Then, Sandusky would rub the boy's backside and blow on his stomach.

“Victim 1 was uncomfortable with the contact and would sometimes try to hide in the basement,” the Grand Jury report says. “Victim 1 testified that Sandusky performed oral sex on him more than 20 times through 2007 and early 2008.”

Victim 2, estimated to be age 10, was subjected to anal sex with his hands up against a shower wall.

Victim 4used to cower in closets when Sandusky showed up at his house.

Eight boys, during the course of 15 years, were allegedly abused by a football coach.

But Sandusky was no run-of-the-mill coach. For three decades, he was the right-hand man of Joe Paterno at Penn State, where football was not just a game but a morality play.

Now Paterno, revered not only for his record 409 victories but for his steadfast standards of high character, will have his legacy tainted by a sordid scandal. Paterno, 84, who had no plans to retire, might be forced into an ungraceful exit as early as this week.

Paterno is to Penn State what George Washington is to the one-dollar bill. Wearing tie, black shoes and thick glasses and speaking in his Brooklyn accent, the Ivy League English literature major is esteemed as a life coach who expects his players to wear throwback uniforms, graduate and become productive citizens.

But the arrest of Sandusky and charges of perjury against two university administrators have torn apart Happy Valley.

What did Paterno know and did he do enough to stop Sandusky? Paterno fulfilled his legal obligation by reporting an incident to his superiors in 2002. But did he fulfill his moral obligation? Did he, as the creator, commander and curator of Penn State's most valuable asset, seize control of a problematic and potentially horrific situation and refuse to let go until it was resolved? Did he have the courage to put the safety of powerless strangers above the reputation of a lifelong friend?

Count the years that have passed and the answer appears to be no.

Count the number of documented victims — probably a small percentage of the number of actual victims — and the answer appears to be no.

There were multiple incidents, including documented ones in 1998, 2000 and 2002. Sandusky brought boys to Penn State games, practices, meals. Yet no one at the university took decisive action. The Sandusky scandal has scary similarities to the Catholic Church's sexual abuse scandal.

Sandusky, 67, selected victims from his own trap, a charitable foundation called The Second Mile, which he started to “help children who need additional support and would benefit from positive human interaction.”

He used his position of authority and glamour as a coach. He bribed vulnerable boys with game tickets, tailgate parties, Nike shoes, golf clubs, ice hockey gear, computers, restaurant meals, cash. He even guaranteed one boy he would be a walk-on player at Penn State.

He molested them in his house, in the hotel where the Nittany Lions stayed on Friday nights, at a bowl game, in a sauna, in a high school wrestling room.

But his favorite place was in the Penn State football team's locker room showers. Seven of the eight victims were abused in the shower.

He's quirky, but power gives Horns' Tucker a leg up on other kickers

Justin Tucker sings opera in the shower, has rapped with Sergio Kindle and once developed such a fondness for soccer shoes that his mother likened him to Imelda Marcos.

Other than that, Texas' place kicker/punter is not much different from other Longhorns football players.

"Quirky. That's a good word for him," offensive guard David Snow said.

Tucker is one of the best kickers around. The senior from Westlake has converted 10 of his 11 field goal attempts, including a personal-best 52-yarder against Kansas last Saturday. His 90.9 percent accuracy mark ranks second in the Big 12.

As a punter, Tucker averages a pedestrian 39.9 yards, seventh-best in the league, with the rugby style approach he uses. But the average return against Texas has been a mere 2.2 yards.

Tucker kicks in bright orange Nike soccer shoes that at least one teammate appreciates.

"I'll maybe try to steal a pair," cornerback Carrington Byndom said. "I would definitely wear them."

Mack Brown does not necessarily favor those shoes, but the Longhorns coach would never say that to Tucker.

"I'm not going to mention shoes to a kicker that's making kicks," Brown said. "I would be the reason that he missed, because he changed shoes."

Tucker said he would wear black and white shoes, but the model he prefers is only available in bright colors.

"A lot of soccer players are a bit flashier," said Tucker, who played the sport until he was 15. "They might wear the purple and the fluorescent green. I get told by members of the officiating crews that 'we keep running after your feet because we think they are penalty flags.'"

Tucker's mother, Michelle, says Justin's passion for soccer boots reminded her of Marcos, the former first lady of the Philippines famous for her shoe collection.

"In high school, I called him Imeldo Marco, the male version," Michelle Tucker said. "I had to hide the Eurosport magazine or throw it away. He'd want to order four pairs."

Not that Tucker is shallow. Indeed, he gives legitimacy to the term student-athlete. He's a music recording technology major who makes good grades, plays several instruments and writes songs.

He auditioned for admittance to his major by performing opera.

Tucker has bonded with teammates by rapping, including in a group that included Kindle, a former star at defensive end and linebacker.

But it's the opera that caught linebacker Emmanuel Acho's attention.

"He's weird, singing in the shower. But he's got a leg on him," Acho said. "He hit from 52, so more power to him. I don't care what he does if he keeps kicking like that."

Tucker's sister Samantha, a sophomore on the Texas women's swimming team, said she is impressed with how her older brother handles one of the occupational hazards of his job.

"There is a lot of pressure," Samantha Tucker said. "If you miss one kick, everyone hates you. If you make it, that's what you are supposed to do."

Tucker handles kickoffs along with punting, field goals and extra points. That's why the staff offered Tucker extra time off to rest when the Longhorns had two weeks between games against Oklahoma State and Kansas.

"We asked him to do nothing except tune up and make sure he got his energy back," Brown said.

Tucker responded with the 52-yarder against Kansas.

"I love to play every snap, every kick of every game," Tucker said. "But during the course of a season, I might lose a couple of yards here or there. I noticed, even after just a few days of limiting the number of hits, it helped out tremendously. Right now I feel I'm hitting the best ball I've ever hit."

Waukesha Man Indicted in Truck Thefts

A 35-year-old Waukesha man is facing federal charges alleging he and five other men were involved with the theft of truckloads of Nike shoes, Pepsi, Chex Mix, fruit snacks, antifreeze, ice melter, chocolate and other items transported to Michigan, Illinois and Indiana for a total value of $1.3 million, according to a news release from the U.S. Department of Justice.
Jeffrey Meyers was indicted one count of conspiracy to transport stolen vehicles and other stolen property in interstate commerce and two counts of theft. He faces up to 25 years in prison and maximum fines of $750,000 if convicted.

Shoe Association Investigates Dumping Allegations on Nike and Adidas

The Indonesian Shoe Association has begun investigations over dumping circumventions on Nike and Adidas producers in Indonesia following allegations made by Brazil. The association's secretary-general Binsar Marpaung said the investigation would take one month.

Man pleads guilty to having counterfeit sneakers

An African man pleaded guilty Monday to having dozens of counterfeit Nike tennis shoes and will likely be deported following the crime.

Alio Ango, 39, of Wind Road, Greensboro, pleaded guilty to felony criminal use of a counterfeit trademark. Graham police charged him with possession of 77 pairs of counterfeit Nike sneakers on Aug. 29, 2010. Ango was arrested April 19 and remained in the Alamance County jail until Monday’s hearing.

Following the hearing, Alamance County Assistant District Attorney Larry Brown said Graham police didn’t have evidence that Ango was selling the shoes, only that they were counterfeited and he had possession of them.

Defense attorney Brad Buchanan told Superior Court Judge Elaine M. Bushfan that Ango was “trying to survive.” Ango speaks very limited English and has no formal education, Buchanan said.

Ango speaks Hausa, a language common in the west African nations of Niger and Nigeria. It was unclear where he was born. His hearing was delayed for some time while the court located an interpreter fluent in Hausa.

He had no prior criminal record.

Bushfan issued an active three- to four-month sentence with credit for 189 days spent in jail. Payment of court costs and $450 for attorney fees were waived. Following the hearing, Ango was placed in custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. It is likely he will be deported.

Bushfan ordered the counterfeit shoes be given to a charitable organization or destroyed.

Nike will pay for the shipping, and upon receipt, they will break the shoes apart into their component parts and recycle them into the materials to make running tracks and the padding underneath basketball and tennis courts.

There are donation boxes in the offices of all of the Whitehall district抯 school buildings if community members would like to donate shoes. Parents can send old shoes to school with their children. Any shoes collected that are non-athletic or still usable, will be donated to Goodwill.

Tim Tebow is balancing a double life. There is Tebow the Broncos quarterback, the 24-year-old second-year NFL player trying to blend in with his teammates while deflecting the intense attention that simmers around him as he prepares to make his first start of 2011 today.

Then there is Tebow the humanitarian, a corporate pitchman and inspirational public speaker with a combination of charisma and collegiate success that has turned him into a celebrity whose fame transcends sports.

And then there is the dichotomy.

For as much as the quarterback appears humbled by his massive popularity, TebowMania is, in part, a self-created phenomenon. Tebow has surrounded himself with a tightknit inner circle of family and friends that double as business partners — Tebow Inc., if you will — who together have carefully planned his every off-field endeavor.

"It goes back, a little bit, I guess, to growing up and my parents and the way they raised me. You want to have people around you that you trust, in everything," Tebow said. "It's not about all the normal things — it's not about let's make the most money we can or being the most popular, but ultimately doing what we want to do and what's in our hearts. It's special, and it's fun."

Team Tebow is a tight network, with family at its core.

Tebow's older brother Robby is his roommate, closest friend and his de facto manager for everything away from football through the sports marketing company XV Enterprises. The company, with Tebow as its only client, is intrinsically linked with the Tim Tebow Foundation, the quarterback's charitable Christian-based organization.

The Tebow family, after selecting agent Jimmy Sexton to handle all contract matters (and some business-related deals) when his career at Florida was done, decided to forge ahead with their own marketing of Tim. It was an unconventional path for someone with Tebow's enormous success as a college player with a Heisman Trophy and two national championships.

From Tebow's perspective, keeping his business in-house, with his brother and partner Angel Gonzalez in charge, gives him a better platform to pick his off-field projects and tie them to his foundation.

"We figured that we could put together something that could handle my marketing. We could save a lot of money, but also do the things that we wanted to do," Tebow said. "Look at my endorsement deals — so much of what they do is supporting my foundation. We can structure that. If you had a different company, they're not going to structure that money."

A marketing magnet

Indeed, he has partnered locally with businesses such as Denver Mattress, with $15 for each mattress sold in May and June 2011 going to the foundation, and Groove Auto for a "Drive for Education" program for at-risk youth. But most of Tebow's marketing has been on a much grander scale.

From the time he played his last college game, in January 2010, and started his first NFL game 11 months later, Tebow signed national deals with Nike (shoes and apparel), EA Sports (video games), FRS (nutritional supplements) and Jockey (apparel). Such major deals are possible because Tebow possesses many of the traits companies are looking for in an endorser, said Stephen McDaniel, a professor at the University of Maryland who specializes in sports marketing.

"He's a good-looking, fit guy, so he's got that sex appeal, and when you listen to him, he's very down-to-earth. That's the persona," McDaniel said. "And there is also this sense of him facing adversity. Not necessarily personal adversity, but professional adversity, and still he comes across as this humble guy."

That does not appear to be the image Team Tebow tried to promote this offseason, as he was among the most visible NFL players during the lockout, in large part because of a major publicity push to promote his autobiography, "Through My Eyes," released in late May.

In addition to book signings in Colorado and Florida, there were appearances on "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" and "Jimmy Kimmel Live," guest spots on Fox News and MSBNC, and a taped appearance on the reality show "The Biggest Loser." Tebow presented an award at the ESPYs in July and was the subject of an hour-long documentary about his pre-draft journey that aired on ESPN. The documentary, "Tim Tebow: Everything in Between" will be released on DVD next month. It was filmed and produced by Chase Heavener, the son of one of Tebow's father's oldest friends.

"As far as access goes, he trusted us because we were friends," Heavener said. "We were probably the only people who could have done what we did because we were friends. That was the bottom line."

With all the publicity in recent months, it's no wonder that news he unseated Kyle Orton as the Broncos' starting quarterback drew a crowd of more than 60 media members to Dove Valley and has dominated cable sports news, newspaper coverage and sports- talk radio chatter the past two weeks.

All Tim, all the time

Here in Denver and among NFL fans, it seems there cannot be enough Tebow.

From the moment he signed with the Broncos, he's had one of the top-selling jerseys in the NFL. Nationally, though, there is some evidence of Tebow Fatigue. According to Henry Schafer, executive vice president of The Q Scores Company, which collects data to gauge the popularity and marketability of celebrities, Tebow's positive Q score dropped from 22 in February — an extremely high score on par with Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers, the past two Super Bowl MVPs — to 18 a month ago. That's still a high score, Schafer said, but a noticeable decline.

Tebow's negative Q score, in turn, has increased since he left college from a 22 to 27. (By comparison, No. 1 overall draft pick Cam Newton had a negative score of 42, and the average athlete rates 28). A Q score is a scale the marketing industry uses to gauge a celebrity's popularity and likeability.

"He stirs emotions, no question about it. But he can make it work to his advantage. He'll get noticed, for better or for worse," Schafer said. "There seems to be a love to dislike him, people love to criticize him. He could change a lot of people's minds if he does well for Denver."

And he could become even more marketable, Schafer said.

"Peyton Manning is the high-water mark," Schafer said. "If (Tebow) pulls it off on the field, he can start approaching that kind of level."

This quantity of jobs lost by Americans is not a sign of what has happened in our country during our economic boom and bust, but rather a shadow of the future showing a time where there are – simply put – less jobs.This conclusion is also held by New York University journalism professor Jeff Jarvis, who stated on Aug. 5, 2011 that our national recovery from the largest economic downturn since the Great Depression will not just be jobless, but will result in less jobs overall for our nation. The idea is simple. Technology increases efficiency and increased efficiency means that fewer employees are needed. This then ripples down through the entire economy.
Many economists and politicians would shudder and choose to forget that last paragraph. For many, choosing not to acknowledge that many jobs – such as those in the print industry – will never be coming back is not an option. Any job replaced by a blog, robot, computer or even fewer people will never exist again. With that said, the only remaining option resides in how we as a nation look at that fact and move on. Moving on, however, isn't nearly as hard as you may think.
It's a matter of simply doing what we Americans have been known for since our nation's founding. We must embrace not our ability to produce real tangible products, but instead produce the ideas behind the products and then find a way of marketing them to the world. China doesn't design the next iPhone or Dell laptops, American engineers do. The biggest grossing websites on the Internet – Google, Facebook, YouTube, and Yahoo! – were all created by American entrepreneurs. Mac OS and Windows were both created by Americans. Are any of these things tangible? Nope. But they are incredibly valuable and world changing.
It's time to recognize that we as a nation are not going to be the largest producers of any physical products. Both China and India's overwhelming population will surpass us in terms of producing physical goods for the world.
We will, however, own the companies and the ideas for the products that are made. Isn't that enough? If every unemployed American stopped looking for a job in the economy and instead created one for themselves by working hard at improving something in our society, be it a product or a service – high tech or low tech – they themselves can create labor and market their ideas to the world.
The time is nigh for self-motivated individuals to create too. With services like kickstarter.com to help raise funds for an idea and a large proliferation in Do It Yourself expertise via Make Magazine, Instructables and community fabrication workshops, anyone with a thought can take that idea and make it into a reality. Anyone can be a 21st century Chuck Taylor.

Chocolate gets personal: Nestle to launch customization pilot program

It's not just the no-foam, half-caff, soy latte, the wheat-crust, extra-cheese pizza or the running shoes with the hand-picked stripes anymore. Now even chocolate can say something about the person buying it.

Nestle is expected to announce Thursday its launch of a personalized chocolate business through its premium, Maison Cailler brand. It will start as a pilot program in the company's native Switzerland, where customers can buy chocolate samples online, fill out a short questionnaire about each piece and be given a "chocolate profile."

The profiles, Nestle said, will reflect a preference for one of five kinds of its chocolate, such as milk or dark, or certain flavors like vanilla or nut. Each of the five has its own name like "ChocoArty," for dark chocolate lovers, and lists personality traits, like "adept in elegance and culture."

Bob Boutin of Knechtel, a Skokie-based food, confectionary and pharmaceutical consulting firm, said that with chocolate and other confectionary prices on the rise, manufacturers are feeling pressure to give consumers more for their money.

Nestle said the sample is priced at about $20, and a personalized box of 16 pralines would cost nearly $28.

In this trend, Nestle follows Starbucks, Nike and Coca-Cola in offering personalized products. Nestle will use the profiles to create personalized boxes of chocolates for customers and their friends or loved ones, and follow up with offers around certain holidays.

"Anything that involves customization or personalization is totally hot today, in chocolate or another industry," said Valerie Beck, founder and president of Chicago Chocolate Tours. "We love whatever we can do to really make something our own."

But Stacy DeBroff, CEO of Mom Central Consulting, said the Nestle program seems behind the curve. She noted companies like Cherry Hill, N.J.-based Chocomize allow customers to make their own candy bars, selecting the chocolate and toppings, which include nuts, dried fruits, herbs and even spices, for about $8 per bar, before shipping.

She added that paying for the samples might also create a hurdle for some consumers. "They're not only asking you to sign up but to pay to enter," she said. "I'm going to pay to tell you what my chocolate preferences are so that until I unsubscribe, I'm going to get pitched?"

Laurent Freixe, head of Nestle's Zone Europe, said while premium chocolate has been growing, the company has noticed that customers "do not necessarily want to buy, to eat the same things as their neighbor, and people have more and more personalized expectations."

Nestle plans to invite Maison Cailler customers to share their chocolate profiles on Facebook, underscoring the importance of social media and the growing number of consumers making purchases online. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the price of confectionary products and chewing gum rose 5.2 percent for the year ended in September, on top of relatively high increases for each year since 2007.

However, chocolate sales grew unabated during the recession and are expected to reach $18.1 billion in the U.S. in 2011, up 14 percent from $15.8 billion in 2006, according to Euromonitor.

Katrina Markoff, founder and CEO of Chicago-based Vosges Haut Chocolat, isn't a fan of the personalization trend in chocolates.

"I don't know that they would be so successful." Markoff said. She said her customers "want to be surprised" by her creations and in many cases "don't know what they want." Vosges, which expects to have sales of $25 million to $30 million this year, makes candies with vegan, organic and gluten-free chocolates and uses exotic flavors like Gruyere cheese and wasabi.

More 'Back to the Future'-Inspired Technology Coming Soon

As we inch ever closer to 2015, the world predicted in Back to the Future Part II looks closer and closer to reality.

Earlier this year, Nike introduced Air Mag sneakers, created to resemble the self-lacing power sneakers Michael J. Fox wears in the 1989 film. Now comes word that the DeLorean, the long defunct sports car company that created the signature gull-wing door car used as the time machine in the films is about to make a comeback. The company announced on Monday plans to introduce an all-electric DeLorean car in 2013.

The car, called the Electric DeLorean DMC-12 is expected to have a top speed of 125 mph from 260 horsepower, according to MSN. The price will be anywhere from $90,000 to $100,000.

A prototype version of the car was recently unveiled at the company's headquarters in Humble, Texas.

Meanwhile, tech site Geekologie has posted two videos showing levitating quantum superconductors in action at Tel Aviv University. This is the kind of technology that makes things like the hoverboards in Back to the Future Part II possible.

In fact, work at Paris Diderot University showing experiments with a superconducting skateboard, cooled with liquid nitrogen, that can carry a person along five meter rails has also been posted online. Can a commercially available overboard be far behind?

Late in the golf season, my thoughts start to drift to the south. As the winter months approach, I have found that on many days Ojai can be 5-7 degrees warmer. This is a wonderful excuse for a visit to one of the finest resorts on the West Coast.

The resort
The Ojai Valley Inn and Spa has long been a weekend retreat for Hollywood’s elite. This relationship dates back to the filming of Frank Capra’s “Lost Horizon” which was shot on location nearby.

The Inn’s classic Spanish-style architecture fits perfectly into this warm valley with large mountains rising up in all directions. The property sits atop a knoll affording comfortable views from its restaurants and most rooms.

In recent years, the inn has had a complete makeover to achieve a peaceful Mediterranean feel throughout the resort. Spanish tile floors give way to white stucco, wood beams and red rooftops. There are numerous water fountains and the landscaping is immaculate adding to the serenity.

The rooms are large, averaging 425 square feet and never too far from the activities. We were just steps from the pro shop, driving range and 1st tee. The restaurants were no more than a wedge shot away uphill, with the Spa equally close downhill. The resort features the finest linens with its signature “Ojai Nest” bedding. The bathrooms are oversized and stocked with Spa Ojai amenities.

The Oak Grill is one of my all-time favorite places to dine and a must for all resort guests. The views of the golf course and surrounding mountains are stunning as you dine underneath the 200-year-old Oaks giving ample protection from the sun. The food and service were excellent, as was my Moroccan Grilled Salmon.

Spa Ojai is perennially ranked in the top 10 in the U.S. by Travel & Leisure, Conde Nast, USA Today and Trip Advisor. The spacious, relaxed setting with its Moroccan design is sure to please and another good reason to visit.

The golf
The Ojai Valley Inn Golf Club is one of the finest layouts in Southern California, having been laid out by George Thomas who also designed Riviera, Bel Air and Los Angeles Country Clubs. The course was updated in 1988 by Jay Morrish and is a classic “long short course.” While only 6,300 yards it actually plays longer with a par of 70, including many par fours more than 400 yards and par threes more than 200.

Through the years, famous pros and celebrities have flocked to its fairways. Jimmy Demaret and Doug Sanders have been pros while Bing Crosby, Bob Hope, Will Smith, Kevin Costner and Michael Douglas played regularly. The Michael Douglas & Friends event was played here several times along with the PGA Champions Tour.

The most famous holes are no doubt the “Lost Holes,” which were reintroduced in 1999 having been part of the original Thomas design. The par-three 7th will command attention at just under 200 yards and slightly downhill.

The approach will need to be perfect with OB to the right, lateral canyon just left and large bunkers short. Over the years I have found it safer to shoot for the front of the green regardless of the pin position. This gives the player more landing area and a good chance to walk away with a 3 or 4 on a potentially devastating hole.

The trip
The drive to and from Ojai is a good enough reason to make the trip, especially if you are sitting in the passenger seat. If you take the 101 you will be oceanfront along the Gaviota Coast and then again just south of Carpinteria.

Take Highway 33 just before Ventura for the inland drive. Check out the Creek Rd cutoff, which will save you 10 minutes if you do not want to drive through downtown Ojai.

LeBron James has become the NBA player that fans love to hate ever since he unceremoniously dumped his home state of Ohio and moved along to the Miami Heat last season to seemingly become part of some sort of freakishly unstoppable winning machine. Unfortunately for the Heat and its fans, the team was stoppable — even though it took until the NBA Finals to get the brakes to completely work.

And now, everyone in the NBA has been stopped, due to the lockout that owners and agents and players and veterans and league execs and tons of lawyers, among others, are busy trying to get untangled in order for some actual NBA games to be played this season.

Do you think all that dislike and the lack of a season is stopping the James Marketing Juggernaut? Of course not. It's time for it to go into overdrive. One of his sponsors, Nike, is releasing a line of James off-court apparel featuring a lion logo designed to honor LeBron's “heart of a lion.”

The generic-looking logo is “reminiscent of the coat of arms of medieval English monarchs such as King Richard the Lionheart,” according to USA Today.

LeBron also has a “Lion 6” logo that will be on T-shirts, rugby shirts, shoes, and jackets and, guess what? It'll all be on sale in time for the holidays! A real surprise, right? Perhaps there will be some NBA games to wear all your new LeBron gear to as well.

The copy for the collection (revealed on Nike's Facebook page) proclaims, “Game after game. LeBron James' heart stays strong. The two-time NBA MVP has seen his fair share of battles. He's done his time on the hardwood. In the gym. And around the neighborhood. With every victory the beast within grows stronger. More determined. Fearless. Always on.”

That new Lion logo, by the way, made its first appearance last season when His I-ness returned to play the Cavs in Cleveland and “wore the all-wool ‘Destroyer' jacket,” which wasn't for sale at the time, USA Today reports. Now it will be.

Nike is also releasing a new set of $170 LeBron James sneakers that are inspired by the Air Force. The shoe is called “The Cannon” and is part of the LeBron 9 line of footwear. “The military-green theme is a nod to the Miami Heat having their first training camp since James joined the team last season at Hurlburt Field and Eglin Air Force Base,” the Associated Press reports.

The shoes will be released this weekend in South Florida before hitting store shelves nationwide.

Hannah Jones on Nike's Sustainable Innovation Marathon

After two hours of interactive warm-up exercises, the 2011 Innovation Forum kicked off with Hannah Jones, the Vice President of Sustainable Business & Innovation for Nike.

As Joel Makower put it in the introduction to his 30-minute interview with Jones, when you think of innovation, you pretty much always think of Nike. From their waste-based shoes to their radical collaboration within their industry and beyond, Nike is truly mapping the trail of sustainable innovation.

Jones began by walking the audience of more than 200 sustainability professionals through the journey that Nike is taking on innovation -- a journey that has involved not just her own team and her own company, but companies as far-flung from the sportswear and apparel industries as Procter & Gamble and Eli Lilly.

She spoke particularly about the benefits of viewing innovation through the same lens that you view sustainability. "One of the things that sustainability people have learned how to do is think about systems and system change, and to think about networks and understanding grassroots communities," Jones explained. "Bringing those worlds together has great promise for both of those worlds."

Jones had a lot of insight to offer on the state of the market, both in terms of changing shoppers' buying habits to value greener products to changing how any company in any industry can be greener.

"Our mission statement isn't 'make lots of stuff," Jones said. "It's 'inspire and innovate on behalf of the athlete.' How can we think about completely different materials that would be great for performance, but would also be regenerative, recyclable, and reusable? How do we think about supply chains that are radically transformed? How do we make these better places to work, make them LEED, make them greener? And what does that mean for sustainability economy?"

Later in the discussion, Jones shared two takeaways about how to get people to want to buy products that are greener.

1. Never compromise performance or price for sustainability. If you do, you will ghettoize sustainability and you'll continue the belief in the market that sustainability equals less, and that, Jones said, is one of the biggest sustainability challenges we still face.

2. Give the consumer something they didn't even expect. How do you create a demand for doing new things? Jones gave the example of the gear that Nike gave to the footballers at last year's World Cup in South Africa. Made entirely from recycled plastic bottles, Nike never compromised on their performance requirements, and she said the players loved it, both on the field and off.

Similarly, the Jordan 23 basketball shoe made it greener as a result of moving away from solvents to glue the pieces together, as well as working with the factory to develop a way to use stitching and geometry to partially hold the shoe together. "It was a breakthrough inspiration," Jones said, " and it sends a shudder down the design community." And the innovation gave an added thrill to Nike customers -- not only was it a high-performance shoe, but when buyers found out it was significantly greener, it became an added bonus.

Although Nike has come a long way down the path of sustainability, and one that started from what Jones described as a "difficult" place -- namely, the child labor scandals of the 1990s -- Jones stressed that none of it was easy. Nike has put years of effort into assessing the life-cycle impacts of its materials -- and Jones says that Nike has about 75,000 materials that go into its various products in the course of just one year.

They've turned those studies into a series of tools that they're sharing within the apparel industry and beyond, with the goal of helping everyone get better. Whether it's the Considered Index, its Green Xchange, working with the Eco Index Apparel Tool or the Sustainability Consortium, Jones said the future of green is going to have to revolve around sharing.

As a closing thought, here's how Jones laid out the goal of sustainable innovation: "We're going to have to make today's status quo obsolete because [what we're making tomorrow] is better."

The Nike Zoom Kobe 7 revealed, has removable ankle strap

Based on this image of the Nike Zoom Kobe 7, it appears that the general look of the shoe won't be that much different from last year's edition. Except for the fact that it has a removable ankle strap and insoles, of course.

Unlike LeBron James' signature line that has changed significantly over the years in look and style, Kobe has mainatined a sleek and low (cut) profile for his shoes ever since the Kobe 4. It will retain the flywire that has been a staple of the line, but it won't have the controversial scales of the 6, which was a hate it or love it feature among fans. Mesh will be visible in the Zoom Kobe 7 and it will have a new heel design that also borrows a lot from the 6.

What is most interesting about the 7 is the removable ankle strap. Sneaker Files is not sure whether or not the package will also include an additional insole, but the ankle strap is the game changing element that could make Mamba's shoe the dominant line in the Nike stable again.

Despite the NBA lockout, Black Mamba has been keeping himself busy with tours in Asia and Europe. There are the rumors that he will be playing in Italy, but even if that doesn't come to pass, at least he has a feature part in a Nike short film coming up.

Are you a saver or a spender? Definitely a spender with my own money, although what we make in the business gets reinvested back into our projects before going back into our own pockets, So frugal with work and more laissez faire with my own cash.
Do you shop around for better value? I go online all the time to find the best prices for items like flights, clothes, vinyl and accommodation. I don’t really enjoy shopping, so if I ever do shop around town for bargains, it’s on a mid-week morning, as opposed to a weekend, when its less hectic.
What has been your most extravagant purchase ever? Certain vinyl albums that cost several hundred euros due to the rarity and condition of the item.
What purchase have you made that you consider the best value for money? My Macbook Pro. It gets used for a range of tasks and doubles up for work and leisure.
Have you ever crossed the Border to shop? No, I live on my own and do not really eat at home so there is no real benefit for me to go up there for some thrift purchases.
Do you haggle over prices? I spend a lot of my time haggling in work with artists and agents over fees, flights, tour budgets etc. It’s second nature to me, but I tend to fall back and not be so sharp when it is outside of work-related matters.
Has the recession changed your spending habits? It has definitely taught me to be more mindful of my spending and to prepare for all eventualities.
Do you invest in shares? I have invested exclusively in my business and have not yet had the opportunity to try the markets.
Cash or card? Cash is king but cards will get you out of a hole if you find yourself in one. I tend to carry far less cash on me than I used to though.
What was the last thing you bought and was it good value for money? My iphone4 as it allows me to keep up to date with work when I’m on the go and is great for organising your schedule if you’re travelling. It also has a video camera and thousands of apps so it is the most versatile thing I own. I also bought some Nike Id trainers on the Nike website where you design your own shoes. I don’t think I could ever go back to normal trainer buying after this experience – it’s such a brilliant idea.
Have you ever successfully saved up for a relatively big purchase? I have been building up my record collection and music equipment for years, which is worth a fair whack on paper and is something I continually add to, so this is probably my biggest purchase, but it’s an ongoing thing.
Have you ever lost money? I’ve lost money on projects a fair few times, but personally I haven’t lost anything of significance.
Is money important to you? Money is important for my work as it’s so cash intensive but after that I tend to not care too much for it. As long as we have enough to work on projects we are really passionate about and can pay the bills then I’m generally happy. Obviously I would like more of it, but it certainly isn’t the most important thing in my life by any means.

The guesses that came in yesterday for our “Whose Shoes” feature included RCP‘s Erin McPike and freelancer Stephanie Green.

The right answer is videographer Elizabeth Glover, who freelances for outlets like TWT and Insight News and Feature and previously Wonkette. She also owns and runs Bikram Yoga Capitol Hill, which some Washington journos like Politico‘s Patrick Gavin have been known to frequent.

Glover purchased the shoes at Palace 5ive on 14th Street near U St. NW in DC. “It's a super cool skate shop,” she explained. “They're Nike skateboarding shoes. They were on the sale in the Spring, I think, and marked down from $150 or so to $60ish. I don't know why they have different colored shoelaces. They came that way – already laced.”

She also said wearing these shoes to upscale receptions isn't her norm. “I don't usually wear them to fancy media events but I was rushing from the studio and forgot to change out of them. My loafers were in the car. Whoops!”

Seven charged with possession of counterfeit goods at Raleigh flea market

A raid at a Raleigh flea market yielded seven arrests on charges of trademark violations.

Agents with the North Carolina Secretary of State working with the Raleigh Police Department uncovered what are believed to be counterfeit designer shoes and apparel, and pirated music and movies with an estimated retail value of $932,883.

"There is an increasing awareness that these are not victimless crimes, and that they do in many cases even have ties to organized crime," Secretary of State Elaine F. Marshall said Wednesday.

Arrested Saturday at Watson's Flea Market at 436 Rock Quarry Road in Raleigh were:

* Thierno Mamadou Diouf, 45, of Raleigh;

* Njeri Lavar Royster, 18, of Raleigh;

* Kara Mbye, 50, of Franklinton;

* Darryl Seth Tillery, 17, of Clayton;

* Moises Sanchez, 20, of Turkey;

* James Antonio Jerod Banks, 19, of Raleigh; and

* Trevon Will Scott, 17, of Raleigh.

Diouf, Royster, Mbye and Tillery were each charged with one count of felony criminal use of a counterfeit trademark.

Sanchez, Banks and Scott were each charged with one count of unauthorized use and possession of sound recordings.

Diouf was said to be in possession of 29 pairs of counterfeit Nike Air Jordan shoes. The retail sales value of the products exceeded $3,000.

Royster was said to be in possession of counterfeit Mitchell & Ness hats, New Era hats, Nike shoes, Timberland boots, True Religion jeans and shirts, and Polo jeans and shirts. The retail sales value of the products exceeded $10,000.

Mbye was said to be in possession of 109 pairs of counterfeit Nike Air Jordan shoes, 42 pairs of counterfeit Nike Air Force One shoes, and 100 pairs of counterfeit Nike shoes. The retail sales value of the products exceeded $10,000.

Tillery was said to be in possession of counterfeit Mitchell & Ness hats, New Era hats, Nike shoes, Timberland boots, True Religion jeans and shirts, and Polo jeans and shirts. The retail sales value of the products exceeded $10,000.

And Sanchez, Banks and Scott were each said to be in possession of more than 100 unauthorized recorded devices, "which did not contain the true name and address of the manufacturer."

"The same criminal pipelines that bring in fake designer clothes and pirated movies can then also bring in knock-off electrical extension cords that can present a deadly fire hazard in your home, not to mention illegal drugs, weapons, and even human trafficking," Marshall explained.

Celebrities from movies, television, and music will join with some of the most famous names in tennis on October 15 for the fourth annual Serve It Up to End MS tennis event to benefit the Southern California & Nevada Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

The tournament will be held at the famous Jack Kramer Club in Rolling Hills Estates, approximately 30 minutes south of Santa Monica. In addition to the official celebrity pro-am tournament, the event will include a series of clinics, team tennis challenge, chances to beat the pro, lunch, silent and live auctions, and a terrific cocktail party. Jo Menary and Lenny Jones are what you'd call a winning combination at Alta Sierra Country Club's Golf Pro Shop.

On one hand, you've got Menary, who is the store's hot-shot soft goods merchandiser. A former general manager of Como Sport — an Italian line of golf apparel by Cobra — Menary brings with her a keen eye for top-of-the-line active wear, reasonable prices and good contacts in the industry.

On the other hand, you've got Lenny Jones, a beloved shop sales representative who has worked at the pro shop for more than 28 years. Longtime club members and community members alike say Jones' high level of expertise in the shop is only matched by his winning personality. He's watched local kids grow up and come back to the shop with families of their own. Many say it doesn't take long before Jones' customers become his friends.

Jones said he is frustrated that — despite being open for decades — many people still don't realize the shop is open to the public.

“Anybody can pop into the shop, the restaurant, or to schedule a time to play golf,” he said. “We are not exclusive — we have a lot of fun.”

This time of year Jones said he helps about 90 customers a day, a number that dwindles when the weather starts to turn. Nonetheless, there are a healthy number of die-hard winter golfers who keep the shop open year-round, not to mention those who pop in to buy gifts or active wear, much of which is not specific to golf.

“We offer the best equipment, apparel, shoes, golf clubs, putters and instruction,” said Kacey Tyler, the club's golf professional who heads up the golf shop's operations. “We also do golf club repair. We've got everything do with golf right here. People really need to know they don't need to go to Roseville to get top names at a good price and a great selection.”

Don't get Menary started on the clothing line at the golf shop unless you're ready to learn about comfortable, up-to-the-minute, breathable fabrics and styles. It's her passion.

“I don't go to trade shows very often because I prefer one-on-one interactions with the clothing and accessory reps,” Menary, who was eager to show off the store's newest accessory, an elegant, sparkly ball marker necklace. “I like it when the reps them to come to me. I sit out in their big air-conditioned trucks and go through their racks with the latest clothes. I definitely know how to get good prices, fabrics and flattering styles for women of all ages.”

Women's lines include — but are not limited to — Monterey Club, DKNY, Greg Norman Collection, Travis Mathew, Jamie Sadock, EP Pro, Sport Haley, Adidas, Fairway Outfitters, Antigua and Sunice. Shoes include Footjoy, Sandbaggers and Dawgs.

Men's brands in clothing include Adidas, Ashworth, Greg Norman, Monterey Club, Smith & Tweed and Antigua.

The shop carries top names in golfing equipment and can fit clubs to a player's swing and body type, which Tyler says makes a huge difference a golfer's game. Customers can “demo” clubs on the driving range before selecting the irons and woods they want. Scores of demo days throughout the year feature such manufacturers as Callaway, Cleveland, Nike, TourEdge and others.

In addition to her experience in golf clothing, Menary lives and breathes the sport itself. She's a Nevada County Country Club golf championship winner, and her husband Dave, a former long-drive professional, is a golf sales representative. She carries an 11 handicap. Menary and her shop cohorts are busy gearing up for Alta Sierra's Ladies Invitational, scheduled for Oct. 5 through 7.

As for Jones, he says his No. 1 goal is to make sure his customers realize that life is about having fun.

“Most of our members are retired,” he said. “I'm here to help them enjoy what they've worked over half their lives to get to. They deserve to enjoy their retirement. I love it when they stop by to say hi.”

Nike Profit Climbs 15%

Nike Inc. the world's largest maker of athletic shoes and apparel, said Thursday after the markets closed that its first quarter profit rose 15% from last year, as higher sales, better expense management and a lower effective tax rate helped offset lower gross margins. The company's quarterly earnings per share also handily beat analysts' estimate as did its quarterly revenue.

The Beaverton, Oregon-based company reported net income for the first quarter of $645 million or $1.36 per share, compared to $559 million or $1.14 per share for the year-ago quarter.

On average, 19 analysts polled by Thomson Reuters expected the company to earn $1.21 per share for the first quarter.

Gross margins for the quarter fell to 44.3% from 47.0% a year ago, mainly as a result of higher product costs and a higher mix of off-price revenues sold at a lower margin than the prior year.

Revenues for the first quarter increased 18% to $6.08 billion from $5.18 billion in the same quarter last year. Excluding changes in currency exchange rates, first quarter revenues grew 11% from a year earlier. Eighteen analysts had a consensus revenue estimate of $5.75 billion for the first quarter.

For the first quarter, footwear sales rose 19% to $3.3 billion, while apparel sales increased 16 to $1.6 billion and equipment sales surged 24% to $342 million.

First quarter North America revenues increased 16% year-over-year to $2.2 billion, while revenue for Western Europe rose 14% to $1.2 billion and Central and Eastern Europe revenue surged 24% to $334 million.

Revenue for Greater China climbed 15% to $528 million in the first quarter, while Japan revenue rose 17% to $191 million. First quarter revenue from emerging markets jumped 35% to $799 million from $591 million a year ago.

Revenue from the company's other businesses, which includes Cole Haan, Converse Inc., Hurley International LLC, Nke Golf, and Umbro Ltd., increased 10% to $762 million in the first quarter.

Worldwide future orders for Nike brand athletic footwear and apparel, scheduled for delivery from September 11 to January 2012, rose 16% from last year to $8.5 billion.

By region, futures orders for the North America region were up 16%; Western Europe rose 9%, Central and Eastern Europe increased 17%, Greater China jumped 27%, Japan down 10% and emerging markets futures orders surged 22%. At the end of the first quarter, global inventories stood at $3.1 billion, up 41% from from a year ago.

“When is ‘that’ used, and when is ‘which’ the more appropriate word?”
In general, newspaper style is to use “that” to introduce an essential clause and “which” to introduce a nonessential clause. An essential clause can’t be removed from a sentence without changing meaning; a nonessential clause can be, but it’s included to give more information about the subject.
The meaning dictates whether you need an essential or nonessential clause. I learned the rule with this example:
Essential clause: Nike shoes that fall apart should be returned for a refund. (Only those few Nike shoes that fall apart should be returned.)
Nonessential clause: Nike shoes, which fall apart, should be returned for a refund. (You could take out the two commas and the “which fall apart,” and the sentence would read “Nike shoes should be returned for a refund.” It’s a complete sentence all right, but it’s also maybe libelous. In this case, the writer is declaring that all Nike shoes fall apart. The newspaper that publishes such a sentence will need good lawyers.)

* “I took the book that was on the table.” Correct. Which book was taken? The one that was on the table. The clause beginning with “that” is essential to understanding which book we’re talking about.

Nick Daiber wins Nike shoe design competition

A 17-year-old student at Highland High School has won a nationwide shoe design contest sponsored by Nike.

Nick Daiber actually tied for first place. Then NBA player Carmelo Anthony made the deciding vote.

"It was really awesome," said Daiber. "Having the judges pick was really cool. But having Melo pick my shoe over the other guy's was like really amazing."

Diaber showed NewsChannel 5 a prototype utilizing a high-top tennis shoe.

"This is taped-up," he said. "I taped over a real shoe and drew on it."

Then he brought out the finished product. No one will be lacing it up any time soon, however. It's a ceramic model.

"This right here," he said, pointing to the top of the shoe. "This part of your foot sweats the most. So it's like a mesh bootie here. And then this shell of a top. And a special lacing system."

Chris Durbin is an engineering teacher at Highland High School.

"I think Nick is the perfect example of the kind of exciting things high school students can do if we just give them the resources and get out of their way," said Durbin.

Art teacher Laura Wander said she is not surprised by Daiber's success.

"No, I'm not. He has wanted this so bad," said Daiber. "He's got such a great work ethic and this is all he's been working on since last year."

The ultimate prize is yet to come. Daiber hopes to get a chance to meet Carmelo Anthony and watch him play basketball while wearing the shoes Daiber designed.

Mayflower resident assaulted Tuesday

A resident of Mayflower Residence Hall was assaulted Tuesday afternoon around 2 p.m. as he was leaving the northeast entrance of the building, according to a press release.

The suspect wore a ski mask and reportedly punched the victim in the back of the head and attempted to steal his wallet. A Good Samaritan stepped in and was able to aid the victim in retrieving the wallet, the release said.

According to UI police, the suspect is described as a 25- to 30-year old black male, 6 foot, 200 pounds; he was last seen wearing all black clothing and black Nike-style basketball shoes. The alleged victim also said there appeared to be a cut design in his hair on the right side of his head.

UI police are also seeking the Good Samaritan, who is described as an older white male, possibly 40 to 50 years of age, who might go by the name Mark or Clark. He is described as 5-10, 170 pounds, with a thin silver mustache and light brown hair.

Former Alabama football coach Paul “Bear” Bryant will come to life on stage this weekend in the form of “Bear Country,” a play that takes audiences through pivotal events of Bryant's life, up to the end of his coaching career. Produced by Theatre Tuscaloosa and penned by playwright Michael Vigilant, “Bear Country” will be held at Shelton State's Bean-Brown Theatre several nights each week until Oct.2.

Vigilant wrote the play as part of the Alabama Shakespeare Festival's Southern Writers Project. After a three-year process of research, reading about Bryant's life and interviewing family, friends and former players, rehearsal began in 2008 for its first run.

According to Vigilant, the play's overarching message is found in the coach's quote, “Five to seven plays from each game make the differences, whether you win or lose.”

“I wanted to pick five to seven [moments] of Coach Bryant's life and make them the play,” Vigilant said. “We see these pivotal moments in his life and how he developed into the person he was.”

Bryant is played by returning actor Rodney Clark, who brings us through moments such as Bryant's first discovery of football while listening to the 1926 Rose Bowl with his uncle, as well as his playing against Tennessee on a broken leg and his decision not to leave Alabama for a job with the Miami Dolphins. Younger versions of Bryant and those around him are played by the cast's other three members.

Vigilant recalled his nerves on opening night of their first production in 2009 but said warm reviews and exceptional turnout both thrilled and relieved him.

“I have to admit, I've written a lot of plays and been at a lot of opening nights,” Vigilant said. “But I don't think I quite understood the magnitude of what Coach Bryant means to Alabama.”

According to the playwright, every player he interviewed shared the sentiment that Coach Bryant was not just a coach, but a figure who gave them the drive and guidance to help them succeed on and off the field.

“[Coach Bryant's] probably a lot more than you think he was,” Vigilant said. “I'm always pleased to see people rising to their feet at the end of a production [of Bear Country], and I know it isn't just for the performance, but it's celebrating the tremendous legacy of Coach Bryant.”

Clark, a member of the company since 1995, was apprehensive at first about taking the role of Coach Bryant.

“I grew up in Alabama. I was an Alabama fan, went to school here. I watched him on TV,” Clark said. “The thought of screwing it up and having everyone in Alabama after [me] was frightening.”

However, as the script became more and more appealing and his schedule aligned, Clark accepted. Clark said he immediately began digging into YouTube videos of the coach and figuring out just how he sounded, looked and responded to certain issues at the end of his career.

“I haven't been to an [Alabama football] game in a long time,” Clark said. “I went to the opening game this year, and I was in tears. Seeing that video introduction [featuring Coach Bryant], it brought to my mind how important it is to represent this man properly and how much he meant to the state of Alabama.

Eventually, he captured the “mellow” and “warm” aspect of Bryant with his signature deep accent, bringing it into a theatrical form.

Not only is Clark revisiting his role as Coach Bryant, but he is also taking on the character alongside three new cast members. Clark said that, while balancing being an actor and a director can be tricky, and new actors make the production very new, the play's central direction remains the same.

“[Bear Country's] really in great praise of an iconic figure who has been loved in this area for so long,” Clark said. “It's a good way to learn a lot of things about [Coach Bryant], about his personality, and something about his person.”

The next performance of Bear Country will take place tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the Bean-Brown Theatre. The run will continue until its final performance on Oct. 2 at 2:00 p.m.

Edgewood Eagle Cheerleaders Raise Money, Collect Shoes

The Edgewood Eagles cheerleading squad does more than cheer at Pop Warner games.
Recently, the squad raised $700 for Jackson, a great dane recently featured on local television who needed his two front legs operated on. The money went to Great Danes Rescue around New England and was raised during a recent car wash in front of Cranston High School East.
On Sunday, the squad held a sneaker drive to collect shoes that will be shipped to Nike. They'll then recycle the shoes to make indoor tracks, basketball and tennis courts and playgrounds around the world.
Nike recieved more than 6,000 applications for the drive and Edgewood was one of just a few hundred chosen to participate.
Their goal was to ship 100 sneakers to Nike and so far, they've already collected 250.

Parents save when kids stay home

Anyone who has taken their kids back-to-school shopping knows how hard it can be to resist pleas for a Dora the Explorer folder or a Lightning McQueen lunchbox. But this year, some parents have been testing a new strategy: leaving the little ones at home.
Parents are being squeezed by stagnant wages and rising costs, not to mention a growing list of classroom supplies that teachers request they buy.
But kids want the Nike shoes and Abercrombie & Fitch tees they see in ads every day, never mind the cost. They also don’t like to be dragged from store to store while their parents comparison shop.
As a result, only 56 percent of parents say they’re bringing their kids along for back-to-school shopping this year, down from 80 percent last year, according to marketing data firm America’s Research Group.
“One of the best ways to save money is to do the shopping and bring it home and say, ‘Here are your back-to-school clothes,’ ” said America’s Research Group President C. Britt Beemer. “When children are along, pleasing them and avoiding a tantrum is an easier choice than trying to say, ‘No way.’ ”
Gayle Strickland Jones, who lives in Middletown, Del., decided to handle the back-to-school shopping this year without her children after her 10-year-old son pleaded for an $8 pair of titanium scissors at Staples — just because they were cool.

On a solo trip, she ended up buying a $3 basic pair of scissors at Walmart instead.
Similarly, Jones, who works at DuPont, was able to save money on purchases for her daughter. Last year, Jones bought her seventh-grade daughter a new backpack with polka dots, so this year, the girl requested that all her school supplies be in zebra print. As a compromise, Jones picked up a two-pack of zebra-print erasers for $1.
Ultimately, shopping without the kids saves Jones money, which is important because her husband was laid off from his sales job earlier this year. She spent just $75 on school supplies this year — much less than she says she spent last year — and even less than if the kids had been with her.
“They would not only be pickier but wanting things they don’t necessarily need,” Jones said about shopping with her kids.
To be sure, children have always bugged their parents to buy unnecessary doodads. A generation ago, kids begged their parents for Legos and My Little Pony after watching commercials for the toys during Saturday-morning cartoons. But that was the extent of their brand exposure.
Now, kids are being marketed to on several digital channels from the time they can talk. In total, companies spend roughly $17 billion per year advertising to kids, up from $100 million in 1983, according to the not-for-profit group Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood. And children younger than 8 are the most susceptible to marketing because they interpret ads literally, not understanding the intent is to drive sales.
“If you show it to kids enough, they’re going to want it,” saod Sandra Calvert, director of the Children’s Digital Media Center at Georgetown University.
That has put a new level of pressure on parents at a time when they’re looking to spend conservatively in the down economy.
The average family with kids in grades kindergarten through 12 plans to shell out $604 for clothes, school supplies and electronics this year, down slightly from $606 last year.
But in a 2011 back-to-school shopping survey by market-research firm Kelton Research, most parents said that, more often than not, their kids push them to buy certain products or brands. And almost one in two parents said they feel pressure to buy the highest-quality or costliest items for their children.
“When I was a kid, I used to pester my parents for name-brand shoes, but I had much less access, and I was much less marketed to,” said Gareth Schweitzer, president of Kelton Research, adding that now it’s “harder for parents to save money.”
Gina Lincicum, a stay-at-home mother of an 8-year-old boy and 5-year-old twins, said it’s tough to keep a budget in check when shopping with kids.
So this year, she has decided to order her children’s clothing online and then have them try it on at home, where they won’t be tempted by more expensive duds. (Lincicum, the blogger behind the site Moneywisemoms.com, said she is waiting until late September to do this so she can catch deals.)
“When we’re out, my son says, ‘I want that Mario T-shirt,’ ” said Lincicum, whose family has been feeling the stress of the high cost of living in their northern Virginia town. “I’m like, ‘Wait a second, you have enough T-shirts to get you through two years.’ ”
Sue Werle took a similar approach when she decided to exclude her four children, ages 2 to 8, from back-to-school shopping trips.
Werle, who lives in Sherwood, Ore., opted to buy most of her kids’ school supplies online because she could take her time and ensure she was getting the lowest price — a feat she says is impossible when she brings the kids to the store because they are impatient and want a lot of unnecessary things. For instance, her 8-year-old son insists on Skechers-brand shoes, which can run between $36 and $60 in his size.
“It’s hard when you know those Hot Wheels pencils are just really cool,” said Werle, who opted for very basic school supplies but decided to allow each child to pick out one bigger, special item, such as a backpack or pair of shoes. “But when you’re trying to stick to a budget, you have to go, ‘What’s going to matter to my child in the long run — that they have a cool backpack or the pencil that in two weeks is going to be lost, broken or chewed on?’ ”
Laura Train decided to do her back-to-school shopping without her kids even knowing. Train, who works for the Social Security Administration in Baltimore County, Md., picked up school supplies at Target while her two children were out of town in Texas this summer.
Between clothing and supplies, she budgeted $500 for both kids, and so far she hasn’t gone over. But her kids are at an age — 11 and 14 — that she didn’t feel comfortable buying everything without their input. Train did her best, though, getting basic, inexpensive items in colors she thought they would like. She even picked up one item for her daughter that wasn’t on the list.
“I got her a mirror for her locker,” Train said. “She thought that was pretty cool.”
